Medieval Monastery Gardens in Iceland and Norway
2021
Gardening was an important part of the daily duties within several of the religious orders in Europe during the Middle Ages. The rule of Saint Benedict specified that the monastery should, if possible, contain a garden within itself, and before and above all things, special care should be taken of the sick, so that they may be served in very deed, as Christ himself. The cultivation of medicinal and utility plants was important to meet the material needs of the monastic institutions, but no physical garden has yet been found and excavated in either Scandinavia or Iceland. Especially the Cistercians were well known for being pioneer gardeners, but also other orders like the Benedictines and A…
Zur Bedeutsamkeit von Operationalisierungen medienpädagogischer Grundbegriffe: Kritisch-rationale Anmerkungen zur Medienbildung
2017
Tryptophan-Containing Dual Neuroprotective Peptides: Prolyl Endopeptidase Inhibition and Caenorhabditis elegans Protection from β-Amyloid Peptide Tox…
2018
Neuroprotective peptides represent an attractive pharmacological strategy for the prevention or treatment of age-related diseases, for which there are currently few effective therapies. Lactoferrin (LF)-derived peptides (PKHs) and a set of six rationally-designed tryptophan (W)-containing heptapeptides (PACEIs) were characterized as prolyl endopeptidase (PEP) inhibitors, and their effect on β-amyloid peptide (Aβ) toxicity in a Caenorhabditis elegans model of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) was evaluated. Two LF-derived sequences, PKH8 and PKH11, sharing a W at the C-terminal end, and the six PACEI heptapeptides (PACEI48L to PACEI53L) exhibited significant in vitro PEP inhibition. The inhibitory pe…
From particular polynomials to rational solutions to the PII equation
2022
The Painlevé equations were derived by Painlevé and Gambier in the years 1895 − 1910. Given a rational function R in w, w ′ and analytic in z, they searched what were the second order ordinary differential equations of the form w ′′ = R(z, w, w ′) with the properties that the singularities other than poles of any solution or this equation depend on the equation only and not of the constants of integration. They proved that there are fifty equations of this type, and the Painlevé II is one of these. Here, we construct solutions to the Painlevé II equation (PII) from particular polynomials. We obtain rational solutions written as a derivative with respect to the variable x of a logarithm of a…
Un cuento de robots : La hija cibernética de descartes
2021
French philosopher René Descartes is today valued as a forerunner of the studies of human mind, artificial intelligence and robotic systems. Throughout his work there are large references to automata and the possibility of artificial life, as well as an assessment of the differences between rational behavior of human beings and the purely mechanical of animals and automata. In addition to these references, there is a fable about the creation by the philosopher of an automaton that replicated his deceased daughter Francine, a story that is well known among the French and Anglo-Saxon specialists, but not so much in the Spanish ones, which is what settles this short work
Towards an Agent-Based Model for the Analysis of Macroeconomic Signals
2020
This work introduces an agent-based model for the analysis of macroeconomic signals. The Bottom-up Adaptive Model (BAM) deploys a closed Walrasian economy where three types of agents (households, firms and banks) interact in three markets (goods, labor and credit) producing some signals of interest, e.g., unemployment rate, GDP, inflation, wealth distribution, etc. Agents are bounded rational, i.e., their behavior is defined in terms of simple rules finitely searching for the best salary, the best price, and the lowest interest rate in the corresponding markets, under incomplete information. The markets define fixed protocols of interaction adopted by the agents. The observed signals are em…
When Competition Is Pushed Too Hard. An Agent-Based Model Of Strategic Behaviour Of Referees In Peer Review
2013
This paper examines the impact of strategic behaviour of referees on the quality and efficiency of peer review. We modelled peer review as a process based on knowledge asymmetry and subject to evaluation bias. We built two simulation scenarios to investigate largescale implications of referee behaviour and judgment bias. The first one was inspired by “the luck of the reviewer draw” idea. In this case, we assumed that referees randomly fell into Type I and Type II errors, i.e., recommending submissions of low quality to be published or recommending against the publishing of submissions which should have been published. In the second scenario, we assumed that certain referees tried intentiona…

Religious and spiritual motifs in the art of the patients of Nikkilä Hospital
2021
This article focuses on religiousness and spirituality in the art works of psychiatric patients of Nikkilä Hospital, Finland. The pictures analysed here belong to a collection held at the Helsinki City Museum and they were made during the twentieth century. The theoretical frame of the study is a cultural study of mental health. The collection is approached as presenting a specific kind of imagery which has connections not only to the personal history and diagnoses of the patients; their cultural context and hospital environment is also taken into account. The religiousness and spirituality of the Nikkilä collection are also compared with outsider art and examples of art history internation…
